“Rebirth” is a canvas inspired by a photograph taken by FONKi’s close collaborator, Bong Dy. For half a decade FONKi has been devoted to exploring Khmer art through his own personal art. “Rebirth” marks a passage towards artistic maturity for the artist. The work is a re-appropriation of symbols specific to the country. Is the red Krama surrounded like a Python, referring to the Khmer Rouge? or rather the traditional scarf unfolds as a sign of liberation, causing the “little girl with lotus” to spout like the Venus of Milo. The Khmer Rouge regime took everything from the country.
FONKi refuses that the colour red and the Krama remains associated with the years of horror and destruction. “Rebirth” is a hymn to the Khmer youth and its future through a fantasy and surrealist world – reflecting the magical atmosphere of the “Kingdom of Wonders”.
