Acrylic & aerosol on canvas
“Don’t Forget Me” is a canvas inspired from a photograph taken by the photographer Bong Dy. This portrait was painted in April 2015, in Montreal, as part of the 40 years’ commemoration of the victims from the Khmer Rouge regime. This painting reflects FONKi’s trips across Cambodia. It is a mixture of experiences, a lot of emotions and an overflow of painting, all during a time where the artist was stifled by his own creative process.
Done with a mixture of acrylic paint and aerosol, the artist is steering away from his primary medium (aerosol) which caused him healthy problems and a reduction in his sense of smell. “Don’t Forget Me” is a search for freedom to get out of the prison that is the post traumatic inter-generational stress present in families suffering from the war. This portrait is a silent cry from the lost souls to the survivors of war and their descendants.
